I’ve always had a pretty good understanding of my body. I mean, after years working in gyms and hospitals, you kind of learn a thing or two. But upper body strength? Oh boy, that was a different story. Push-ups were my arch-nemesis. I would watch others effortlessly push their bodies off the ground, while I floundered, wondering why gravity and I had such a complicated relationship.
I even worked in hospitals, helping people rebuild their strength after injuries. I could guide them through their recovery with ease, but secretly, I felt like a fraud. How could I help others with their upper body strength when I could barely hold a plank for more than 10 seconds without my arms trembling? Then, yoga happened.
It wasn’t until I got serious about yoga that things started to change. Yoga taught me that strength is stability, control, and patience. I remember the first time I attempted Chaturanga Dandasana (that yoga push-up pose). My arms wobbled like noodles, and I wasn’t sure whether I was supposed to laugh or cry. But something about the practice was different.
Yoga encouraged me to be kind to myself, to build strength from the inside out, It took time, but through consistent practice, I started seeing progress. My push-ups became less “face-plant into the mat” and more “I got this!” Slowly but surely, I began to feel the muscles in my arms, shoulders, and back working in ways they never had before. And the best part? I was enjoying it.
And let’s be real, I’m not out here doing one-arm push-ups or bench pressing cars (yet!), But I’ve found a kind of strength that feels sustainable. It’s not just physical; it’s mental, too. When you challenge yourself to do something you’ve always struggled with, you grow in ways you never expected.. In this video, you’ll even see me working through a wobbly crow pose—because the journey isn’t perfect, but it’s progress.
